China warned the U.S. on Monday (December 2) against crossing the "red line" over Taiwan and urged it to stop supporting Taiwan independence separatist forces.
The remarks made on Monday by Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian came after Taiwan President Lai Ching-te visited Hawaii on Saturday (November 30).
Lai was making a sensitive two-day trip to Hawaii as part of a week-long visit to allies in the Pacific. China has condemned the trip, saying it opposes any such transit stops by Taiwanese leaders on U.S. territory.
Lai also held a 20-minute call with former U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Sunday (December 1), during which they discussed China's military threats, Taiwan's official Central News Agency reported.
China claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, a position Lai and his government reject, and has stepped up its military activities around the island in the past five years.
