Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has informed families of hostages in Gaza that Israel has accepted a new ceasefire proposal put forward by US envoy Steve Witkoff, according to Israeli media reports.
“Israel accepts the new Witkoff outline,” Netanyahu said, referring to a plan presented by U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff. The statement was confirmed by his office and widely reported in Israeli media.
Hamas later confirmed it had received the proposal through mediators and was reviewing its contents. The proposal ncludes provisions for both a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange. Earlier this week, Witkoff said he was optimistic about securing an agreement that would halt fighting and facilitate a prisoner exchange, including the return of hostages held in Gaza.
“I can also confirm that those discussions are continuing, and we hope that a ceasefire in Gaza will take place so we can return all of the hostages home,” Leavitt told reporters.
The plan marks one of the most serious diplomatic pushes since the war began, with pressure mounting from both sides' domestic audiences and international mediators seeking a resolution.
