Russia is dismissing the Vatican as a credible venue for peace talks with Ukraine, citing religious and geopolitical concerns, according to senior Russian sources.

Russia reportedly does not consider the Vatican a viable location for peace negotiations with Ukraine due to its Catholic identity, NATO-member surroundings, and Western travel restrictions. They argue that the Vatican lacks influence in a conflict rooted in Eastern Orthodox contexts and note that many Russian officials cannot even access the site due to EU sanctions.

Despite U.S. President Donald Trump's suggestion and support from Italy’s prime minister, the Kremlin remains skeptical, favoring neutral nations like Türkiye or Gulf states. Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov called the Vatican proposal “a bit inelegant,” reinforcing Moscow’s preference for more geopolitically neutral venues.
