Russia has announced the expulsion of two journalists from Germany’s ARD network in a tit-for-tat response to Germany’s actions against Russian media. The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that one correspondent and one cameraman from the German broadcaster would be expelled, following Germany’s decision to close the Berlin bureau of Russia’s Channel One.
According to Channel One, the closure was prompted by security concerns, and two of its journalists, a correspondent and a cameraman, were ordered to leave Germany. In retaliation, Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that the expulsion of the ARD staff members was a direct response to the German authorities' actions against Channel One's reporters.
Zakharova also confirmed that the two ARD journalists had been instructed to return their accreditation documents and leave Russia. However, she suggested that Moscow might consider re-accrediting new ARD journalists, provided that Germany allows Russian journalists from Channel One to resume "normal work" in Germany.
