Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro has undergone intestinal surgery in Brasilia after being hospitalized with severe abdominal pain, forcing him to cut short a regional tour aimed at rallying political support.
Doctors earlier said the pain was linked to complications from a stabbing he suffered during his 2018 presidential campaign, an attack that nearly claimed his life after he lost around 40% of his blood and required emergency surgery.
The hard-right former army captain, who governed Brazil from 2019 to 2022, has been traveling the country in recent weeks, advocating for congressional approval of an amnesty bill for his supporters who stormed government buildings following his 2022 election defeat.
In a message to allies before his operation, Bolsonaro criticized the harsh sentencing of a supporter given 10 years in prison and once again urged Congress to approve the amnesty bill.
