Citizens and artists rallied in Lima demanding action on rising crime after the killing of Armonía 10’s Paul Flores.

Thousands of Peruvian citizens have taken to the streets of Lima to protest a surge in crime following the assassination of a popular cumbia singer, sparking nationwide outrage.

Paul Flores, lead vocalist of the band Armonía 10, was shot dead earlier in the week while traveling on a bus with the ensemble. The band’s manager has blamed a criminal gang for the killing.

Several Peruvian music groups, including Armonía 10, have joined the protests under the hashtag “#wedontwanttodie,” calling for urgent government action to address growing insecurity.

In response to the rising violence, lawmakers voted on Friday to remove Interior Minister Juan José Santiváñez from office. The government has also declared a state of emergency in the capital and deployed soldiers to the streets.

President Dina Boluarte addressed the nation, announcing increased police operations.

Since the start of the emergency authorities have captured 945 suspects.
