Romanian authorities have arrested six individuals, including a former army general, over allegations of attempting to destabilise the state with foreign involvement. The move follows the expulsion of two Russian diplomats.

Romanian authorities have detained six individuals on charges of attempting to destabilise the state, allegedly with Russian involvement. Among them is 101-year-old former army general Radu Theodoru. The arrests took place as Romania expelled two Russian diplomats for actions deemed inconsistent with diplomatic norms, with Moscow stating it will respond.

According to prosecutors, the group had a military-like structure and engaged with foreign contacts regarding a possible withdrawal from NATO. They allegedly sought to introduce political changes, including a new government, national symbols, and a revised constitutional framework.

Officials clarified that the investigation is unrelated to the ongoing case against politician Călin Georgescu, though one of the expelled Russian diplomats reportedly had indirect links to a suspect in that case.
