A knife attack in Mulhouse, a city in eastern France, has resulted in at least one fatality and multiple injuries. The incident occurred on the afternoon of Saturday, February 22, near a market and in proximity to a demonstration, as reported by local media.
Expressing deep sorrow, Mayor Michèle Lutz described the situation as a moment of horror for the city in a Facebook statement.
According to Public Prosecutor Nicolas Heitz, two municipal police officers sustained severe injuries, while three others were lightly wounded.
Authorities have confirmed the suspect’s arrest. Heitz revealed that the alleged attacker, a 37-year-old man, was already on law enforcement’s radar and had been flagged on a terrorism watchlist. Originally from Algeria, he was under judicial supervision and awaiting trial, local officials stated.
Police have established a security cordon around the canal market, where the deadly attack unfolded, as they proceed with further investigations.
