A British healthcare worker who contracted Ebola while working in the Democratic Republic of Congo is being transferred to the United Kingdom for specialist medical care, according to British authorities.
The patient, whose identity has not been disclosed, was deployed to DR Congo as part of a humanitarian response effort supporting the country's ongoing battle against one of the largest Ebola outbreaks ever recorded.
Officials said the individual is in a stable condition and will be treated in a specialist high-consequence infectious disease facility upon arrival in Britain. Dedicated medical transport arrangements have been put in place to ensure the transfer is carried out safely.
The UK government confirmed that the patient had tested positive for Ebola while in DR Congo but stressed that the risk to the British public remains low.
“A British citizen currently in the DRC has tested positive for Ebola,” a government spokesperson said, adding that health authorities do not believe the case poses a significant threat to public health in the United Kingdom.
Officials also indicated they do not expect the medical evacuation to affect international travel or trade.
The healthcare worker is the first known British national to be infected during the current outbreak in DR Congo.
Several cases involving European nationals have emerged during the epidemic. Earlier this year, France reported an Ebola infection in a doctor returning from a humanitarian mission in Congo, while Switzerland recently evacuated a patient from Nigeria for treatment.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said it has assisted with multiple medical evacuations during the outbreak at the request of governments and aid organisations but declined to comment on the individual case.
The current Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo has become the world's second-largest outbreak of the disease.
More than 10,000 confirmed infections have been recorded, while nearly 5,000 people have died since the outbreak began. Health officials have struggled to contain the spread of the virus, which has affected multiple provinces across the country.
Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person and can cause severe illness, including fever, internal bleeding and organ failure. According to the WHO, the disease has an average fatality rate of around 50 per cent, although survival rates vary depending on the outbreak and access to treatment.
Imported Ebola cases in Britain remain extremely uncommon.
According to the UK Health Security Agency, only four confirmed Ebola cases have been recorded in the country since the virus was first identified in 1976.
British health authorities say specialist isolation units and established emergency protocols remain in place to manage suspected or confirmed cases and to minimise the risk of transmission.
The evacuation highlights both the risks faced by frontline humanitarian workers and the international effort required to respond to large-scale infectious disease outbreaks.
