German police have detained a suspect after a major fire broke out at the historic Kehlsteinhaus, known as the “Eagle’s Nest”, a mountain retreat once used by senior Nazi officials, including Adolf Hitler.

Around 200 firefighters and emergency personnel were deployed to the area near Berchtesgaden in Bavaria after the building caught fire on Friday.

Images from the scene showed flames and thick smoke rising from the mountaintop structure as emergency crews worked to bring the blaze under control.

Police said a suspect was detained close to the scene and investigators are examining whether the individual was connected to the fire.

No possible motive has yet been disclosed.

Historic Nazi-era site

The Kehlsteinhaus was built in 1938 as a guest house for senior Nazi officials and their visitors.

Located high in the Bavarian Alps, it is separate from Hitler's nearby former summer residence, the Berghof.

After the Second World War, the Kehlsteinhaus was preserved as a historical monument associated with Germany's Nazi period.

The site is now owned by the state of Bavaria and has become a well-known tourist destination.
