The earthquake was centred in Nagqu, a sparsely populated, high-altitude city in northern Tibet, and was the strongest tremor recorded in China since January 2024.
More than 300 police officers, including traffic and community police, were deployed to the epicentre to assist with rescue and emergency relief operations, the Nagqu police department said.
Officers inspected damaged homes and helped residents move to safer areas. Footage shared by police showed emergency teams loading supplies into trucks and examining damaged buildings and rubble in the dark.

Earlier footage released by local media showed residents leaving their homes and taking shelter outdoors or inside vehicles parked along the streets. One resident said the strong shaking woke them and caused their house to creak during the tremor.
