Investigators are examining an alleged cockpit assault aboard a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv that left the captain injured and forced the aircraft to divert to Saudi Arabia.
The aircraft, which was travelling to Tel Aviv on 30 September, landed safely in Tabuk. Authorities in several countries are now working to establish what happened aboard the flight and what prompted the incident.
Flight FZ1073 was carrying 174 passengers, including 27 children, according to reports. Israeli officials allege that the co-pilot attacked the captain during the flight, but key details have not been independently verified and remain under investigation.
The aircraft departed Dubai for Tel Aviv on Wednesday when an emergency developed en route.
Israeli officials said the co-pilot allegedly assaulted the captain with a sharp object during the flight. The captain reportedly sustained injuries but remained able to operate the aircraft.
According to the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the captain managed to continue flying despite being injured. Officials also said passengers and crew helped bring the situation under control.
Investigators have not yet released a detailed account of events inside the cockpit, leaving the precise sequence of the confrontation unclear.
Flight-tracking data indicates that an emergency was declared during the incident.
Reports citing Flightradar24 data said the aircraft transmitted emergency transponder codes before changing course forTabuk in north-western Saudi Arabia.
The aircraft also descended rapidly before stabilising and continuing towards Tabuk. Passengers reportedly said they initially believed they were experiencing severe turbulence before realising that an emergency had occurred.
Flight-tracking information can show how an aircraft moved during an incident, but cannot reveal what happened inside the cockpit or the intentions of those involved.
Official accounts indicate that passengers and cabin crew intervened as the situation escalated.
Israeli authorities said the captain was able to open the cockpit door, allowing others to come to his aid. Reports suggest other Flydubai pilots who were travelling as passengers may also have assisted.
The precise roles of individual passengers, crew members and off-duty pilots remain unclear.
Flydubai confirmed that the aircraft landed safely and all passengers were accounted for. Travellers were reportedly later flown to Israel aboard a replacement aircraft.
Israeli officials said the person accused of the assault was an Omani national.
Saudi authorities detained the suspect after the aircraft landed in Tabuk. No detailed information about the suspect has been released, while investigators have yet to announce any formal findings on a possible motive.
The injured captain has been identified in reports as Indian national Smit Machchhar. He received medical treatment after the incident, although further details about his condition have not been publicly disclosed.
The suspect's nationality does not indicate a motive or provide evidence of involvement by a government or organisation.
No motive has been established.
Determining why the alleged assault took place is one of the central questions facing investigators.
Some Israeli officials have suggested publicly that the incident may have been an attempt to endanger the aircraft. No evidence has been presented publicly to support a definitive conclusion, however, and investigators have not determined whether the motive was political, ideological, criminal or personal.
Israeli officials have also said they do not currently view the incident as a conventional hijacking.
Flydubai has urged caution over speculation as investigations continue.
Any conclusion about the motive remains preliminary until investigators release their findings.
Authorities in several countries are now involved in the investigation.
Saudi Arabia is leading inquiries into the suspect following the emergency landing in the country. Aviation authorities in the United Arab Emirates are also examining the incident, while Israeli security officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding the Tel Aviv-bound flight.
Among the questions investigators are likely to examine are:
Flight data and cockpit procedures are expected to form a key part of the inquiry.
The incident has prompted questions over aviation security procedures.
Israeli officials have indicated that pilot screening and security procedures for flights into Israel may face increasedscrutiny. Investigators are also expected to assess whether changes to cockpit security, crew procedures or emergency protocols are needed.
Flydubai, which operates flights between the United Arab Emirates and Israel under the framework created by the 2020 normalisation agreements, has not announced operational changes while investigations continue.
Despite the aircraft's safe landing, several key questions remain unanswered:
The emergency ended without loss of life, but investigators must now reconstruct events inside the cockpit and determine what triggered an unusual mid-air incident aboard a commercial flight in the region.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has accused the U.S. and Israel of seeking to foment internal divisions in Iran after failing to defeat the country militarily, Iran's state news agency IRNA reported.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel may participate in the investigation into a serious incident aboard a flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv, while investigators examine the motive of the co-pilot involved.
Passengers restrained a flydubai co-pilot who allegedly stabbed the pilot and tried to crash a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday.
