Ukrainian soldier’s daughter asks when he is coming home as war keeps families apart.
Two-year-old Snizhana wants to know when her father is coming home.
Her father, Yevheniy Borysenko, serves with an artillery brigade in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, hundreds of kilometres from his family in Boryspil, near Kyiv.
Yevheniy and his wife, Alina, married in 2023, and their daughter was born the following year. His visits home are rare and often brief, with military duties repeatedly calling him back to the front.
During a video call with his daughter, several explosions nearby suddenly interrupt their conversation. “Okay, bunny, I’ll call you later!” Yevheniy tells Snizhana before ending the call.
“Every time he comes to visit me, it’s just wow! A surprise! Unexpected!” Alina said. “And then his colleagues call him: ‘Go there again!’ And once again, everything inside me just breaks.”
The family’s experience reflects the reality for many Ukrainians who remain separated from loved ones serving on the front lines, as fighting continues in the east and Russian missile and drone attacks reach cities far from the battlefield.
An apartment building near the family’s home was badly damaged in one of the recent attacks.
Yevheniy himself says he worries about his family whenever Russian drones approach, while Alina tries to protect the children from the fear of the explosions by telling them the sounds are thunder. “I don’t want my child to hear these explosions,” Yevheniy said.
Despite the risks, Alina says she wants to remain close to her family and her husband. “I’ll stay here because my older daughter was born here, my younger daughter was born here, my husband is here, my mother-in-law is here. I want to be here!” she said.
Her decision comes as Ukraine faces an increasingly dangerous threat from Russian attacks, including jet-powered drones and ballistic missiles.
Civilian casualties in Ukraine remain on the rise, while Russian civilian casualties, although considerably lower, have also risen sharply this year.
For families like the Borysenkos, the war is measured not only in explosions and frontline battles, but also in missed visits, interrupted calls and young children waiting for their parents to come home.
