Revellers ushered in the Lunar New Year in Sydney’s Chinatown on Wednesday (January 29) in a street festival that attracted locals and tourists alike.

A dance troupe performed traditional lion dances in colourful lion costumes to kick-off the festival, which was adorned with models of snakes, alluding to the new lunar year being a ‘snake year’.

“Snakes are typically a bit scary, especially to Asians… so we’ve done a very cartoon style to it" said designer Fiona Ho who created the festival’s "family friendly" models of the reptile.

The Sydney Lunar New Year festival will run from January 29 to February 16 and will feature a variety of events including night markets, performances and dragon boat racing.
