The Democratic Party's progressive wing has claimed a significant political victory after Abdul El-Sayed narrowly won Michigan's Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate, setting up a closely watched contest against Republican Mike Rogers in November.
With 99 per cent of votes counted, El-Sayed led moderate rival Haley Stevens by just one percentage point, 48.5 per cent to 47.5 per cent, in what became one of the closest and most consequential Democratic primaries of the year.
The result marks the first time a progressive candidate has won a statewide Democratic primary in Michigan, a battleground state won by President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
Addressing supporters after his victory, El-Sayed hailed the outcome as a victory for grassroots politics.
"My hope is that our democracy will never be the same," he said. "From here on out, we can always point and say, 'No, this is the people's democracy, and we will always own it.'"
A physician by profession, El-Sayed built his campaign around improving healthcare, tackling the cost of living and ending unconditional U.S. military aid to Israel.
His message attracted strong backing from younger and progressive voters, while high-profile endorsements from Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren helped cement his credentials on the left of the Democratic Party.
Stevens, by contrast, was supported by leading party figures including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. She also received substantial financial backing from pro-Israel groups.
Despite a hard-fought campaign, Stevens struck a conciliatory tone after the result, congratulating El-Sayed and pledging to support his campaign against Rogers in November.
El-Sayed also sought to bridge divisions within the party.
"Whatever differences that we might have had in the primary, they pale in comparison to what unifies us."
The Michigan contest had been widely viewed as a test of where Democratic voters stand following the party's defeat to Trump in 2024.
El-Sayed's victory is expected to strengthen arguments from progressives that a campaign focused on economic populism, grassroots organising and a more critical stance towards Israel can win in competitive states.
The primary also recorded the highest turnout in the history of Michigan's Democratic Party, underlining the intensity of interest in the race.
Michigan is home to one of the largest Arab American populations in the United States, making the conflict in Gaza and U.S. policy towards Israel particularly influential issues during the campaign.
If elected in November, El-Sayed would become the first Muslim to serve in the U.S. Senate.
In an effort to reassure Jewish voters following the divisive primary, he described them as his "sisters and brothers" and pledged to protect their safety.
Republicans moved swiftly to portray El-Sayed as too extreme for Michigan voters.
President Donald Trump attacked the Democrat on social media, while Rogers framed November's election as a choice between "common sense or complete insanity".
El-Sayed dismissed Republican attacks and accused opponents of trying to exploit his Muslim faith and full name to frighten voters.
"My name is not the reason you can't afford your groceries," he said. "You know what is? Their B.S. policies."
The race now becomes one of the most important Senate contests in the country.
Democrats face an uphill struggle to regain control of the Senate and are widely seen as needing to hold the Michigan seat following the retirement of Senator Gary Peters.
The result is also likely to influence the party's national debate ahead of the 2028 presidential race, as Democrats continue to assess whether progressive policies or more centrist messaging offer the strongest path back to power after their 2024 defeat.
