At least 30 people were killed after armed men attacked a village in Nigeria's northwestern Kaduna state overnight, according to local residents, in the latest deadly assault highlighting the country's worsening security crisis.
Residents said the attackers stormed Naridon village in Kauru Local Government Area shortly before midnight on Monday, opening fire indiscriminately before setting homes ablaze.
Dogon Rana, secretary to the village head, said the assailants shot randomly as they moved through the community, leaving widespread devastation. He said at least eight children were among those killed, while several others were injured.
One survivor, Comfort Monday, who was shot multiple times and remains hospitalised, blamed Fulani gunmen for the attack.
"It is the Fulani people that came to our village and killed our people. They killed 30 people. Also five of us were hospitalised, as you can see," she said.
Another resident and youth leader, Ishaya Dawa, said many victims were women, children and elderly people. He added that some residents were killed with bladed weapons, while others died in the gunfire. Several bodies have since been taken to a local mortuary.
According to Dawa, the attackers also burned homes before fleeing the village. Security forces only arrived several hours later, after the assailants had escaped.
Kaduna State police spokesperson Mansur Hassan said authorities would provide further details on the incident, but no official casualty toll has yet been released.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Violence by armed gangs and criminal groups remains a major security challenge across Nigeria's northwest and north-central regions, where villages are frequently targeted in raids involving killings, kidnappings and arson.
Separately, Nigeria's northeast continues to face a long-running insurgency led by Boko Haram and its splinter faction, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), although there is no indication either group was involved in the Kaduna attack.
