France star Kylian Mbappé became the leading goalscorer in men’s World Cup history after scoring twice in his side’s 6-4 defeat by England in the third-place play-off.
Despite France missing out on third place at competition, Mbappé secured an individual record during Saturday’s high-scoring encounter in Miami Gardens, Florida.
The French forward took his career tally at the tournament to 22 goals, scoring 10 in this year's tournament moving one ahead of Argentina great Lionel Messi.
Mbappé reached the milestone with his second goal of the match in the 66th minute against England, having also found the net shortly after half-time.
His goals gave France hope of completing an extraordinary comeback after England had established a commanding 4-0 lead by the interval. However, the defending champions ultimately fell short, losing 6-4.
Despite his contribution at the 48th and 66th minutes, the captain said the personal achievement was overshadowed by the disappointment of missing out on the final.
“I’m just trying to help my team score every time,” Mbappé said after the match.
“It’s for sure that when you score that many goals in the World Cup, it elevates you to certain levels, but I would have liked not to be the top scorer in history and to play in tomorrow’s final."
“I think it’s good for my legacy, and when we stop playing, to be able to say that I was one of those players. But today, it’s not the first thing crossing my mind,” he said.
The ten goals Mbappé has scored at this World Cup, places him two ahead of Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.
Argentina are due to face Spain in Sunday’s final in East Rutherford, New Jersey, giving Messi an opportunity to challenge both Mbappé’s tournament tally and his newly established career record.
Mbappé is the first player to score 10 goals at a single World Cup since West Germany’s Gerd Müller achieved the feat in 1970.
Although France ended the tournament with defeat, Mbappé’s record further strengthened his status as one of the most prolific goalscorers in World Cup history.
