What began as a fan-created chant just months ago has become one of the defining images of this year's FIFA World Cup, with Norway's "Viking Row" sweeping through stadiums, city streets and social media.
At every Norway match, thousands of supporters sit in unison before mimicking the motion of Viking oars to the thunderous cry of "Ro!"
The celebration has spread from the stands to Times Square, public squares in Oslo and even Norway's parliament, becoming a symbol of unity as the Scandinavian nation returned to the World Cup for the first time since 1998.
The Viking Row is a remarkably recent creation.
The chant was conceived in December 2025 by Norwegian supporter Ole Frøystad, who wanted to create a celebration inspired by the country's Viking heritage.
The idea was later developed by Norway's official supporters' group, Oljeberget Supporterklubb. They refined the choreography, introduced a Viking horn to signal the start of the chant and even released a song, "Viking Blood", featuring the rowing rhythm.
The ritual gained momentum during Norway's friendly against Sweden in June. It later exploded in popularity during the World Cup, where videos of supporters rowing in perfect synchronisation quickly went viral.
Norway's players, led by captain Martin Ødegaard, soon adopted the Viking Row, performing it alongside supporters after each victory.
For fans, the celebration reflects the values associated with Norway's seafaring ancestors.
"The Viking spirit is wanting to win and to do it together," said Ole Harald Flaten of the Oseberg Viking Heritage Foundation.
Knut Roger Brekke, who helps manage the foundation's full-scale replica of the famous Oseberg Viking ship, said the chant captures the communal spirit of Viking rowing.
Brekke also joked that real Viking sailors would have rowed at a much slower pace to conserve energy during long voyages.
For Norwegian supporters, however, the Viking Row is about more than football.
