Three die in Mexico City crowd crush after World Cup celebrations

Three people died from suffocation after thousands of fans crowded the streets of Mexico City following Mexico’s victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, city health officials said early on Wednesday (1 July).

The fatalities occurred near the Angel of Independence, where large crowds gathered after Mexico’s 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the Round of 32.

Emergency crews responded to three unconscious people at separate locations along Paseo de la Reforma, one of the capital’s busiest and most iconic avenues.

Authorities said two victims, a 44-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, were pronounced dead at the scene despite advanced resuscitation efforts.

A third victim, a 48-year-old woman, died after being taken to hospital.

Mexico City Head of Government Clara Brugada offered condolences to the victims' families and urged the public to "celebrate with responsibility, care and empathy."

Mass celebrations

Mexico’s victory over Ecuador marked the country’s first World Cup knockout-stage win in 40 years at the Estadio Azteca, sending the co-host nation into the Round of 16.

Scenes of jubilation across the capital were overshadowed by images on social media showing emergency responders treating distressed fans amid the tightly packed crowds.

With a metropolitan population of more than 20 million, Mexico City is no stranger to major public celebrations, but the tragedy has raised concerns about crowd control during the tournament.
