During a private meeting last November near San Francisco, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged U.S. President Joe Biden to change the language used by the United States regarding Taiwanese independence.
Xi requested that the U.S. state it "opposes Taiwan independence" instead of the current phrasing that it "does not support" independence for Taiwan, according to two U.S. officials familiar with the discussion. China's foreign ministry stated that its position on Taiwan is clear and consistent. Meanwhile, Taiwan's foreign ministry did not comment on the matter.
