An explosion outside a court building in Pakistan's capital Islamabad on Tuesday has left at least eight people injured, according to a police spokesperson.

Some of the victims are reported to be in critical condition, the spokesperson added.

"We are investigating the nature of the blast. It is not clear at this stage. We will be able to provide more details once we receive a report from our forensic team," the spokesperson said.

The explosion took place near the entrance to the Islamabad district court, which is usually busy with numerous litigants.

Local media outlets have published disturbing images of the scene, showing bloodied individuals lying near a police van, though Reuters has not been able to independently verify these reports.
