The U.S. State Department has approved a potential sale of M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and associated equipment to Australia, the Pentagon announced Tuesday.

The Defence Security Cooperation Agency said the estimated deal would cost $705 million and aims to bolster Australia’s ability to respond to current and future threats. The sale is also intended to enhance interoperability with U.S. forces and allied militaries.

“Australia will use the capability to strengthen its homeland defence and protect critical infrastructure,” the agency said.

Key contractors for the sale include Lockheed Martin, L3Harris Corporation, Leonardo DRS and Oshkosh Corporation.
