Peter and Barbie Reynolds, aged 80 and 76, have arrived in the UK on Saturday after being released by the Taliban. They were detained in Afghanistan in February while travelling to their home in Bamyan province, held without charge for more than seven months. Their release was mediated by Qatar.
The couple, who ran an education and training organisation and had lived in Afghanistan for about 18 years, were held in a maximum-security prison under difficult conditions. They were freed on Friday and stopped in Doha, Qatar, where they reunited with their daughter, before travelling on to Heathrow.
Taliban officials said the Reynolds had “violated Afghan law,” but they did not specify what law or give any further detail on the charges.
The family has expressed profound relief and gratitude, acknowledging diplomatic efforts by the UK government and by Qatar.
Observers suggest the release may be part of the Taliban’s strategy to improve ties with the international community, especially given concerns over human rights, governance and the global aid that Afghanistan depends upon.
