Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune appointed Sifi Ghrieb as prime minister and Mourad Adjal as energy minister on Sunday, following a cabinet reshuffle.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune appointed Sifi Ghrieb as the country’s new prime minister and Mourad Adjal as minister of energy and renewable energy, the presidency announced Sunday.

Ghrieb, formerly industry minister, had been serving as acting prime minister since the dismissal of Nadir Larbaoui last month. Adjal, formerly CEO of the state power company Sonelgaz, takes over the energy portfolio amid Algeria’s ongoing efforts to diversify its economy while remaining a key energy supplier to several European nations.

The ministers of finance, trade, and foreign affairs retained their positions, the statement said. Tebboune has tasked Ghrieb with forming a new government, though no details were provided about the composition or timeline for the cabinet.

Larbaoui, who was appointed prime minister in November 2023, was removed last Thursday without an official explanation.
