Footage on Saturday showed security forces storming a two-storey home in Asuncion to capture Bermudez. Paraguay’s anti-drug agency SENAD released video of a long-haired man pinned to the floor and later seated on a sofa, identified by officials as Bermudez.

Authorities from both countries confirmed the arrest, which they described as the culmination of coordinated intelligence efforts. Reuters verified the location of the raid by matching building structures, surrounding trees and a swimming pool to satellite imagery, though it was unable to confirm the exact date of the footage.

Known by the nickname “El Abuelo,” Bermudez was wanted on multiple charges, including criminal association, extortion and kidnapping. He served as police chief in Mexico’s Tabasco state from 2018 to 2024 during the administration of Adan Lopez, a senior figure in the ruling Morena party.

Officials hailed the operation as a significant blow to organised crime networks operating across Latin America. Further details on possible extradition proceedings are expected in the coming days.
