Italian Deputy PM Salvini acquitted of 2019 migrant kidnapping charges, a win for his anti-immigration stance amid rising European far-right support.

On Friday, Italian Deputy PM Matteo Salvini was acquitted of kidnapping charges for blocking over 100 migrants at sea in 2019 during his tenure as interior minister.

Prosecutors sought a six-year sentence, arguing Salvini exceeded his powers, but the court ruled in his favour after a three-year trial.

Salvini, leader of the far-right League party, called the verdict a victory for Italy and its sovereignty. The case had sparked tensions over Italy's migration policies and drew international attention.

Far-right leaders, including Hungary's Viktor Orban, voiced support for Salvini.
