Liberal MPs are openly urging the Canadian government to follow France in recognising Palestine as a state.

Toronto MP Salma Zahid stated on social media that Canada should align with France in formally supporting Palestinian statehood. Fellow Liberal MP Fares Al Soud, representing Mississauga Centre, echoed the sentiment, saying justice for Palestinians “requires recognition.”

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced plans to officially recognise a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in September.

When asked if Prime Minister Mark Carney would take a similar step, his office declined to comment directly and instead pointed to a recent post in which Carney reiterated Canada’s backing of a two-state solution aimed at ensuring peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.
