UN chief calls for immediate ceasefire amid Gaza humanitarian crisis

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday warned that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip has reached a critical level and called for an immediate and lasting ceasefire. He emphasised that vital infrastructure is on the verge of collapse due to a severe fuel shortage.

Guterres’s spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, said that multiple recent attacks on areas populated by civilians have resulted in numerous Palestinian deaths and injuries. Additionally, approximately 30,000 people have been forcibly displaced once again, with no safe places to seek refuge and inadequate supplies of food, medicine, and water.

Israel’s fuel blockade, now in its 17th week, threatens to cut off the remaining lifelines. Guterres warned that without urgent fuel deliveries, incubators will cease to function, ambulances will be unable to reach the injured, and water purification will stop. Humanitarian aid deliveries are also expected to come to a halt.

The Secretary-General stressed the importance of protecting civilians and meeting their needs in accordance with international humanitarian law. He also called for safe and sustained humanitarian access to those in desperate need.

Furthermore, Guterres renewed his call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, as well as the unconditional release of all hostages.
