Magnus Carlsen suffered a shock defeat to China’s Wei Yi at Norway Chess 2025, just two days after beating world champion D Gukesh.

Magnus Carlsen endured a surprising setback at Norway Chess 2025, losing to Chinese Grandmaster Wei Yi in the Armageddon tiebreaker after an initial draw.

The five-time world champion, fresh off a confident win over reigning world champion D Gukesh and a bold social media post, struggled to break through Wei Yi’s defences despite holding the white pieces in the 51-move Armageddon.

The loss marks Carlsen’s first defeat to Wei Yi and comes on his home turf. “I’m disappointed in myself,” Carlsen admitted following the loss, adding that he misjudged key positions in the deciding game.

The 24-year-old Wei Yi, ranked world No.8, has been a rising force in the chess world and demonstrated solid control under pressure to take down the tournament favorite.
