President Ilham Aliyev emphasized that Armenia must respect Azerbaijanis' right to return to their ancestral lands as a fundamental condition for achieving peace, reconciliation, and upholding human rights in the region.
President Ilham Aliyev's statement was made during the International Symposium of Ombudsmen on "Strengthening the Rule of Law: The Role of Ombudsmen and National Human Rights Institutions".
Aliyev highlighted one of the key topics at the symposium regarding the rights of refugees, particularly focusing on the forced deportation and ethnic cleansing of hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis from Western Azerbaijan (modern-day Armenia) that began in the early 20th century.
He pointed out that these deportations left no Azerbaijani community in Armenia, and the cultural, historical, religious, and spiritual heritage of the Azerbaijani people in these territories, including mosques, cemeteries, and monuments, was destroyed. The President called for historical justice, stressing the need for the peaceful and safe return of displaced Azerbaijanis to their homeland.
