Azerbaijan hosted a high-level conference titled "From Momentum to Milestones: Advancing Climate Action in Tourism Beyond COP29" as part of the 71st session of the UN Tourism Commission for Europe.
The event brought together policymakers, tourism leaders, and climate experts to strengthen the alignment of the tourism sector with global climate goals.
The conference focused on integrating climate strategies into tourism policies following the COP29 climate summit, with an emphasis on reducing emissions, promoting sustainable tourism practices, and mobilizing resources for a green transition.
Key discussions revolved around the Glasgow Declaration and the COP29 Declaration on Enhanced Climate Action in Tourism. Both initiatives call on governments, businesses, and stakeholders to adopt carbon reduction targets and pursue long-term strategies for climate resilience.
Two main panel sessions—“Mitigation – Practical Steps for a Low-Carbon Tourism Future” and “Adaptation – Preparing Tourism for a Changing Climate”—explored decarbonization pathways, emission reduction tools, and adaptation strategies to address risks such as rising sea levels, extreme weather, and ecosystem degradation.
Panelists highlighted solutions including climate-resilient infrastructure, nature-based initiatives, and data-driven adaptation policies. Azerbaijan’s efforts were also showcased, including its Climate Action Plan for Tourism and commitment to sustainable infrastructure in tourism development.
The event underscored the tourism sector’s role in the global climate agenda and the importance of translating post-COP29 commitments into tangible, sector-wide action.
