Armenian prime minister Nikol Pashinyan has called for a fresh start in relations with Azerbaijan, highlighting progress in peace talks and mutual recognition of territorial integrity.
Armenian prime minister Nikol Pashinyan has proposed a reset in relations with Azerbaijan, urging both countries to move past longstanding disputes and build a new foundation for cooperation.
Speaking at the Atlantic Council during his visit to the United States, Pashinyan stated that it was time to leave past conflicts behind and focus on a new era of bilateral ties.
Prime minister noted that Azerbaijan and Armenia had already reached agreements on significant aspects of a peace treaty, adding that both nations have committed to recognising each other’s territorial integrity based on the borders of Soviet Azerbaijan and Soviet Armenia, with a mutual understanding that no territorial claims will be made in the future. Pashinyan described this as a crucial step towards lasting peace, stressing the importance of political will to finalise the agreement.
According to him, 15 out of 17 points in the draft treaty have been agreed upon, with the remaining issues concerning the presence of third-party observers on the Azerbaijan-Armenia border and the withdrawal of legal cases from international courts.
