Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze says the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway has strengthened Georgia’s transit role as the country upgrades its rail network and restores passenger links with Azerbaijan.

According to the news agency APA’s local bureau, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said at a government meeting that “the full commissioning of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line a few months ago was an event of great importance for Georgia’s international transit role.”

Speaking at a government meeting, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said the full commissioning of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway earlier this year had strengthened Georgia’s role as a regional transit hub.

The head of government added that Georgia is continuing to modernise its railway network. He said 200 railcars have already been purchased, with a further 200 expected to be delivered and around 50 new locomotives planned for the fleet in the coming months.

Azerbaijan and Georgia also agreed in May to resume daily passenger services on the Baku-Tbilisi-Baku route from 26 May, restoring a connection that had been suspended since the COVID-19 pandemic.
