Explosive devices have detonated near the hotel where French President Emmanuel Macron is staying in Damascus during a visit to Syria, security sources have said.

The Élysée said that Macron was on his way to meet Syria's President Ahmad al-Sharaa at the time and didn't hear any explosions.

State TV reported that al-Sharaa received Macron at the Presidential Palace, after the blasts.

Roads were sealed off and security measures were implemented after the blast. A witness heard explosions in the vicinity and saw smoke rising.

Macron is the first major EU leader to visit the Syrian capital Damascus since Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was toppled in December 2024.

This is a developing story.
