Saudi Arabia religious leaders have condemned attacks targeting holy sites and civilians after authorities reported intercepting two ballistic missiles launched towards the Mecca and Medina regions, while Yemen’s Houthi movement denied targeting the two cities.

According to Saudi state television channel Al Ekhbariya, Abdulrahman Al-Sudais, Head of Religious Affairs at the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, and Saleh Al-Maghamsi, imam of the Prophet’s Mosque, commented on the incident after missile debris reportedly fell near Mecca.

Al-Sudais said targeting holy sites, civilians and facilities was prohibited under religious principles, condemned on humanitarian grounds, and contrary to international conventions and norms.

Al-Maghamsi also condemned what he described as Houthi attempts to target the two holy mosques and other sacred places, saying such actions contradicted the religious principle that these sites should be respected and provide people with places of safety.

Missile debris reportedly falls near Mecca

Al Ekhbariya reported that debris from an intercepted missile fell in Wadi al-Mughammas, approximately 21 kilometres east of the Grand Mosque in Mecca and around seven kilometres from the Arafat area.

The report described Wadi Mughammas as an open-air recreational area surrounded by residential neighbourhoods.

Saudi authorities report interception

Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defence Directorate announced that two ballistic missiles launched towards the Mecca and Medina regions from Yemen had been intercepted and neutralised in the air. Saudi authorities attributed the launches to the Iran-backed Houthi movement.

However, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree denied that the group had carried out attacks targeting Mecca or Medina. In a statement published on X, he rejected the allegations.
