AnewZ has premiered its new documentary film Kontrapunkt in Berlin, exploring more than two centuries of shared German-Azerbaijani history and the legacy of German communities in Azerbaijan.
The documentary traces the arrival of German settlers in Azerbaijan in the early 19th century and the relationships they developed with local communities over generations.
Through personal memories, archival material and expert testimony, Kontrapunkt examines both the achievements and painful chapters of this shared history, including the deportation of Azerbaijan’s German communities in 1941 under Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.
The AnewZ production team travelled nearly 2,700 kilometres across Germany and Azerbaijan for the documentary, meeting descendants of German settlers and visiting locations connected to their history.
Rufat Hamzayev, Executive Director of AnewZ, said the documentary aims to encourage a deeper understanding of the shared history between the two countries.
“I believe and I do hope that Kontrapunkt will give us a better understanding of this shared chapter of German and Azerbaijani history. And I hope that when the film ends, the conversation does not,” he said.
Speaking at the premiere, Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Germany Nasimi Aghayev reflected on the historical ties between the two societies, saying the connection has gained new significance as Azerbaijan and Germany have elevated their bilateral partnership to a new strategic level.
German Ambassador Anja Wallau, who heads bilateral relations with EU member states at Germany’s Federal Foreign Office, also addressed the audience, highlighting the significance of the German heritage in Azerbaijan and the importance of bringing this lesser-known chapter of history to a wider audience.
The Berlin premiere brought together diplomats, historians, contributors and guests, offering an opportunity to revisit a chapter of history that continues to form part of the connection between Germany and Azerbaijan.
