German prosecutors have arrested a Danish citizen suspected of spying for Iran, reportedly gathering intelligence on Jewish individuals and sites in Berlin.

Prosecutors say the surveillance took place in June and say it may have been in preparation for potential terror attacks.

The suspect is believed to have been directed by Iranian intelligence services earlier this year, with German news website 'Der Spiegel' reporting that he received orders from the Quds Force, Iran’s elite overseas military unit.

It's reported that he allegedly photographed locations including the German-Israeli Society's headquarters in Berlin.

Authorities say the arrest was made with the help of police in Aarhus, Denmark, and the suspect has since been transferred to Germany.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had previously warned of Iran’s potential interest in targeting Jewish sites amid rising tensions with Israel.
