Former New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo is setting up a comeback try for NYC mayor.
Andrew Cuomo has announced he is running for New York City mayor in an apparent effort to stage a political comeback over three years after he resigned as governor of the state of New York over sexual harassment allegations.
“Our city is in crisis. That’s why I am running to be Mayor of New York City,” Cuomo wrote Sunday on X, formerly called Twitter, while sharing his announcement video. “We need government to work. We need effective leadership.”
Cuomo stepped down in August 2021 during his third term in office after a report by New York Attorney General Letitia James found that he had sexually harassed multiple female employees, many of whom were young, and created a “hostile work environment for women,” upping the pressure on him to hand in his resignation. Cuomo has continued to deny any wrongdoing.
The Democrat also faced scrutiny over how he dealt with COVID-related deaths in nursing homes in the state during the onset of the pandemic.
Incumbent fellow Democrat Eric Adams, who is running for reelection, has come under fire after President Donald Trump’s Justice Department moved to drop Adams’ corruption charges allegedly in exchange for the mayor aiding the administration’s immigration policies. Cuomo has so far not commented on Adams’ legal entanglements.
Cuomo’s candidacy appeared to gain traction even before his campaign announcement, recent opinion polls have shown.
The Democratic primary is set to take place on June 24.
