Catholics across Latin America prayed for Pope Francis as the Vatican reported he remains in critical condition at a Rome hospital. From Mexico to Argentina, the region rallied in support of the first Latin American pope.
Masses, candlelight vigils, and prayers were held across Latin America on Saturday for Pope Francis, who was admitted to hospital on February 14 and remains in critical condition.
In Buenos Aires, a message reading “the city prays for you” was projected onto the city’s Obelisk. Argentina also issued a nationwide call for prayers, urging communities to unite in support of the pope.
Many in the region feel a cultural connection to Francis, who served as archbishop of Buenos Aires before becoming pope in 2013. “Since he’s Latino, he shares our feelings and culture,” said a worshipper in Mexico City.
Brazil, home to the world’s largest Catholic population, also saw widespread prayers. “It’s not just about worshipping Christ, but also praying for our pope and our church,” said a churchgoer in São Paulo.
Francis, 88, remains under close medical supervision, with Catholics worldwide hoping for his recovery.
