Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Azerbaijan’s Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev discussed closer bilateral ties and the implementation of existing agreements during a meeting in Tehran.
According to the news portal of the Iranian President’s Office, Pezeshkian described the two nations as “relatives and brothers”, calling for maximum use of their capacities and geographical advantages to deepen bilateral relations and strengthen people-to-people ties.
“Air and rail routes should be expanded and better integrated. Stronger connectivity would create greater opportunities to consolidate bilateral relations,” he stated.
Emphasising that the common border should be used as an opportunity to expand cooperation, the Iranian president welcomed the agreements reached during Mustafayev's meetings with Iran’s minister of roads and urban development and other government ministers in Tehran.
“The two countries' scientific, cultural, economic, political and security relations are closely interconnected,” he added. “Joint efforts are needed to further consolidate cooperation.”
Mustafayev briefed Pezeshkian on talks with Iranian officials in Tehran held on the sidelines of the Iran-Azerbaijan Joint Economic Cooperation Commission on Monday and Tuesday.
He reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s determination to further develop relations with Iran, stressing the need to implement and follow up on existing agreements and understandings.
Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development Farzaneh Sadegh, a co-chair of the joint commission, said on Monday that infrastructure projects would boost transport and trade capacity between the two countries.
“Given the friendly and brotherly relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan, there is scope for further development of cooperation between the two countries in various fields, and we will definitely witness the expansion of bilateral relations and cooperation in the future,” Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency quoted her as saying.
Meanwhile, official sources in Baku said Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev telephoned Pezeshkian on Tuesday to wish him good health, a long life and success on his birthday.
During the call, the two leaders recalled their recent meeting in Bishkek and discussed issues raised there, according to local news media.
“Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev reviewed the latest developments in bilateral relations, stressing the importance of continuing consultations and strengthening ties between the two countries,” read a press release carried by the news portal of the Iranian President’s Office on Wednesday.
