Serbian PM resigns amid protests; Vucic considers April snap election but rules out interim government.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has suggested the possibility of a snap election in April following the resignation of Prime Minister Milos Vucevic on Tuesday amid escalating anti-government protests.
Vucevic is the highest-ranking official to step down after the collapse of a railway station roof in Novi Sad last November, which claimed 15 lives and led to months of demonstrations. His departure has unsettled Vucic's government, with the opposition now calling for the establishment of an interim administration.
In a televised address on Tuesday evening, Vucic stated that his party would take 10 days to decide whether to form a majority government or call for an early parliamentary election. "The new election could be held in April," Vucic said. "An interim government is out of question."
This marks a significant shift for Vucic, whose party secured an easy victory in the 2023 snap election but has recently faced mounting pressure.
