One person has died after two freight trains collided on a bridge in Munich in the early hours of Saturday, causing two carriages to derail and crash onto the street below, German police said.

The crash happened in the northern district of Milbertshofen at around 1:40 a.m. local time. Emergency services dispatched around 60 first responders to the scene after receiving reports of the collision, according to Munich's fire service.

Police said the cause of the incident remains under investigation. Authorities have not yet released further details about the victim or whether anyone else was injured.

Johannese Shorer, a Spokesman for the Munich Fire Department, said: "We were called out to a train accident in which two trains appear to have collided, derailed and, in part, fallen off a bridge."

Franziska Romig, a Spokeswoman for the Munich Police, said: "Recovery operations and the accident investigation are still ongoing.

"The police and the fire brigade are on site and working with a large team, but we can expect the recovery to take several more hours, perhaps even days, and Schleißheimer Straße will therefore definitely remain closed until further notice."

This is a developing story.
