Thirteen Cuban soldiers, including four officers and nine soldiers, are missing following explosions at an arms and ammunition depot in Holguin province, Cuba’s armed forces reported on Tuesday.
The blasts occurred early Tuesday in the rural community of Melones, approximately 450 miles (724 km) southeast of Havana. Authorities stated the explosions were triggered by a fire at a construction site, and the incident remains under investigation.
Videos shared on social media showed smoke and flames rising above the tree line near Melones. Rescue teams and firefighters are working to extinguish the fire, with soldiers and police guarding access to the area.
Earlier, officials confirmed the evacuation of 361 residents to a safe location.
