The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting Monday to discuss the U.S. operation in Venezuela.

Colombia requested the session, with backing from Russia and China, to address the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces. The 15-member council has previously met in October and December over tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres may attend the meeting. A spokesperson said the U.S. military action sets “a dangerous precedent” and expressed concern that international law has not been respected.

Diplomats expect discussions to focus on the legality of the U.S. operation and potential implications for regional stability.
