Russian airstrikes have devasted apartment buildings in a residential area of Kharkiv, north-eastern Ukraine, injuring at least 25 people according to the local governor.

On Tuesday, “the Russian army launched two strikes with ballistic weapons,” Governor Oleh Syniehubov said on Telegram.

A rescue operation is currently underway, with emergency services and residents moving through the wreckage. Firefighters are working to put out a blaze caused by the strikes.

It is thought that people may still be trapped under the rubble.

On 1 January, a Russian airstrike hit a private zoo in Kharkiv injuring several large animals, including lions, and killing birds.

Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, has been repeatedly targeted since the start of Russia’s invasion.
