Ukraine claims critical strike on Russian submarine in Novorossiysk

Ukraine’s domestic security service, the SBU, says it struck a Russian Kilo‑class submarine in the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, causing critical damage.

The SBU said the submarine, used to launch Kalibr cruise missiles, is nicknamed a “Black Hole” for its ability to evade sonar. Ukraine estimated the vessel’s replacement cost at $400–500 million due to international sanctions affecting Russian access to components.

According to the SBU, prior drone operations forced many Russian ships to move from Sevastopol Bay in occupied Crimea, leaving the Novorossiysk submarine vulnerable. Russian officials have not commented on the incident.
