At least seven people remain missing following a massive explosion at a fireworks warehouse in the town of Esparto, Northern California, according to a report by NBC News citing local officials.

The incident occurred around 5:50 p.m. local time on Tuesday. Esparto Fire Chief Curtis Lawrence stated that emergency crews arrived to find multiple structures ablaze and a series of explosions taking place across the site.

In a joint statement, the Esparto Fire Protection District and the State Fire Marshal’s Office confirmed: “Seven individuals remain unaccounted for. First responders and investigators are working closely with the property owner to determine their whereabouts.”

Authorities believe the warehouse owner holds a valid pyrotechnic licence. Investigators said they would examine whether activities at the facility complied with licensing requirements.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation. According to Lawrence, the resulting fire triggered multiple spot fires, ultimately spreading across approximately 80 acres.

Esparto is a small town with a population of around 3,000, located about 30 miles (48 kilometres) northwest of Sacramento.
