The Azerbaijani women’s 3x basketball team clinched the silver medal at the European Cup to make history at the just concluded tournament in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The national team sparred with World no 1, Netherlands in the finals, ultimately losing 16:21 in the game.
Azerbaijan had shown an impressive performance all through the game, defeating France and Ukraine in group stages and going on to beat Poland in the quarterfinals and Spain in the semifinals to clinch the coveted spot.
The second place and silver medal win is historical as it marks the first time the women’s basketball team has reached the European Cup final.
The Azerbaijani Minister of Sports and Education Emin Amrullayev posted a congratulatory message to the team on this feat.
"I sincerely congratulate our basketball players and coaching staff who achieved this historic success." he said.
The women’s team had earlier in August climbed 9 spots in the world ranking up from 21st and currently in 12th place.
