Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has declared his readiness for direct peace talks with Russia in Turkey, describing Moscow’s lack of response as a “strange silence.” He emphasized the importance of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s support for the initiative.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Monday renewed his call for possible direct talks with Russia, describing Moscow’s lack of response to the initiative as “a strange silence.”

According to the President, Ukraine is open to dialogue and he is fully prepared to attend the proposed meeting in Türkiye this week. “Ukraine has always supported diplomacy. I am ready to be in Türkiye,” he stated.

However, he added: “Unfortunately, the Russian side has yet to respond to the proposal for a direct meeting. Moscow remained silent all day. It’s a very strange silence.”

Zelenskiy also welcomed former U.S. President Donald Trump’s support for the peace initiative and called on him to participate in the proposed meeting in Türkiye. “It is important that President Trump fully supports the initiative. We would very much like him to be with us in Türkiye for the meeting,” he said.

The President emphasized that Türkiye's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had confirmed his full readiness to host the high-level talks.

Zelenskiy also spoke about a phone conversation he had earlier in the day with Pope Leo XIV. “The Pope expressed warm and meaningful words about Ukraine, our people, and a just peace. We specifically discussed the return of prisoners and children abducted by Russia,” the Ukrainian leader said.

He also confirmed that the situation on the front lines remains tense. He reported that the battles in the Donetsk region and towards Kursk have reached “the fiercest” stage and expressed special thanks to Ukrainian soldiers.

All eyes are now on Moscow — the international community awaits a response from Russian leadership regarding the proposed meeting in Türkiye. According to Zelenskiy, ending the war depends on Moscow, and “the sooner, the better.”
