U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed speaking with Chinese President Xi Jinping since taking office on January 20, though he declined to disclose details of their conversation.

President Donald Trump said in a Fox News interview aired Monday that he has spoken with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other Chinese officials but did not elaborate on the discussion’s content or timing.

"Yeah ... I have talked to him and I have talked to his people, too," Trump said when asked whether he had spoken to Xi since his inauguration. He added that they maintain a “very good personal relationship.”

The White House and China’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Trump’s remarks.

Trade Dispute and U.S.-China Relations

Trump’s confirmation of the conversation comes as tensions between Washington and Beijing remain high over trade disputes and new tariffs imposed by both sides.

Last week, Trump stated he was in no hurry to speak with Xi regarding the ongoing trade war. However, a direct conversation between the two leaders is widely seen as key to de-escalating or delaying further tariff measures.

In recent weeks, China imposed targeted tariffs on U.S. imports and placed several American companies, including Google’s parent company Alphabet, on notice for possible sanctions. The move was a response to Trump’s new 10% tariffs, which came on top of previous trade duties.

Trump and Xi had previously spoken before Trump took office, discussing issues including TikTok, trade, and Taiwan.

The two countries remain divided over a range of geopolitical issues, including cybersecurity, Hong Kong, human rights, and the origins of COVID-19. The state of U.S.-China relations continues to be a central focus of global trade and diplomacy.
